Sustainable Development

Poem : Dear Children, You are the Saviours of this beautiful globe

Dear Children,
You are the saviours of this beautiful globe
You are the future, you are the only hope
Do you know ? “Climate is changing & our planet is in danger”.
But You know what, we are still ignorant about it & behaving like strangers
But the good thing is, it’s never to late, you can be the game changer.
All you have to do is to be echo friendly &  ‘save the Mother Earth’ campaigner.

Dear Children,
Being eco sensitive is going to be a great gesture.
We have to make people again fall in love with nature
We should develop environment friendly culture
Don’t do things that affect the environment just for the adventure.

Dear Children,
We have to move from What is it? to what it can be….
Planet is in danger  because of all of us, you all have to agree
Heal the world, start with yourself & plant at least one tree
Reuse, recycle things to do your bit to make our future pollution free

Dear Children,
Please initiate a positive change to protect the environment
Take a pledge for sustainable development
Adopt an environmentally friendly lifestyle and make some adjustments
for a better, greener future, Show your Commitment

Mission LiFE

Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment) is an India-led global mass movement aimed at addressing the climate crisis by encouraging individuals and communities to adopt sustainable lifestyles. Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the 26th UN Climate Change Conference (COP26) in Glasgow in 2021, the initiative pivots the global conversation from macro-level government policies to individual and collective behavioural change.
The core philosophy of LiFE is to promote "mindful and deliberate utilisation, instead of mindless and destructive consumption," drawing inspiration from India's traditional and cultural practices of conservation and moderation. The mission is designed to mobilise at least one billion Indians and other global citizens to take action for environmental protection between 2022 and 2028. Those who embrace this sustainable lifestyle are termed 'Pro-Planet People' (P3).
Foundational Vision and Idea
Today's international economic system tends to take a "use-and-dispose" course, which results in wasteful consumption and pollution. Mission LiFE aims to transform it to a circular one guided by mindful and purposeful usage.
The Three-Pronged Approach
Mission LiFE is constructed around an overarching approach to drive change across various levels:
• Demand Shift (Phase I: Nudge): This phase includes nudging people and populations towards adopting simple, effective environment-friendly practices in their everyday lives. This phase, first considered for 2022-2023, is focused on mass awareness and behavioural transformation.
• Supply Change (Phase II: Enable): This stage seeks to empower industries and markets to adapt rapidly to changing consumer demand for sustainable products and services, thereby encouraging sustainable production.
 • Policy Change (Phase III: Mandate): The longer term is to shape government and industrial policies that favor both sustainable consumption and production, resulting in mass-scale systemic changes.
Initiatives, Policies, and Programs
Mission LiFE is being implemented by the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) and incubated by NITI Aayog. It is also being aligned with India's current climate commitments, such as the National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC).
LiFE Thematic Areas and Actions
The mission has outlined a set of specific, measurable actions—initially 75—under seven thematic categories to inform individual and community action:
• Save Energy: Behaviors such as turning off vehicle/scooter engines while at a traffic light, employing energy-saving appliances (e.g., under the Ujala Scheme), and turning off lights while exiting a room.
 • Save Water: Behaviors such as repairing leaks, employing water-saving fixtures, and practicing rainwater harvesting.
 • Avoid Single-Use Plastic: Encouraging the use of shopping bags made of cloth, personal water bottles, and non-plastic, green cutlery.
• Minimize Waste (Swachhata Actions): Segregation of wet and dry waste in the household, composting of food waste, and giving waste to biogas plants (GOBARDHAN scheme).
 • Embrace Sustainable Food Systems: Incorporating millets in the diet, opting for locally available seasonal foods, and minimizing food wastage by taking smaller plates.
• Adopt Healthy Lifestyles: Encouraging the practice of non-motorized travel such as cycling, walking, and utilizing public transport, and minimizing e-waste by recycling non-working gadgets.
 • Reduction in E-Waste: Dispose of non-working gadgets at the nearest e-recycling center.

 Key Policies and Enablers
LiFE being a people's movement, it is bolstered by several government policies and interventions:
• NDC integration: India is the first nation to include the idea of LiFE in its revised Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) under the Paris Agreement.
 • 'Meri LiFE' Mobile App: Introduced with the purpose of promoting citizen engagement, the app enables volunteers to register and monitor their contributions towards the LiFE movement.
• Integration with Current Schemes: LiFE efforts are executed using current government schemes to increase their coverage and impact. Examples are as follows:
 • Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM): Deals with waste management and cleanliness efforts.
 • Amrit Sarovar Scheme: Encourages water conservation by reviving water bodies.
 • National Hydrogen Mission: Paces the transition towards a non-fossil fuel-based energy source.
• National Mission for a Green India (GIM): Facilitates afforestation and greening efforts.
Implementation and Mass Mobilisation
The fielding of Mission LiFE takes advantage of India's huge network of government institutions, civil society associations, and youth organizations to organize a Jan Andolan (People's Movement).
National and Local Level Execution
• Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC): The nodal ministry in charge of mission implementation, overseeing efforts across all sectors.
 • Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan (NYKS): Leverages its vast network of youth clubs to carry out grass-root mobilization, organizing awareness campaigns, pledge-taking ceremonies, and cleanliness drives.
 • Educational Institutions: Schools and colleges are enlisted to inculcate 'Pro-Planet People' right from childhood through eco-clubs and theme-based activities.
• Nudges and Challenges: Campaigns such as the 'LiFE 21-Day Challenge' are encouraged to make individuals embrace one eco-friendly habit every day for 21 days, turning it into a long-term habit.

 Global Significance and Outreach
Mission LiFE has been conceived of as a worldwide movement. India has spearheaded the LiFE philosophy on international platforms, including its G20 Presidency, for creating a global coalition for sustainable living.
• International Call for Ideas: The mission calls on academics, researchers, and startups from across the globe to bring innovative and scalable solutions for climate-friendly behavior.
 • Pro-Planet People (P3) Network: The mission seeks to create a global community of people devoted to environmental sustainability through social networks that drive new social norms.
By emphasizing the potential of personal choice, Mission LiFE presents a democratic and grassroots means of climate action that proves masses of small, sustained changes can have a meaningful impact on the planet, potentially saving millions of tons of carbon emissions globally.
